The Criminal Investigation Division

BASIC FUNCTION:

Conducts and supervises follow-up investigations of crimes occurring in the Town of Thomaston and the property/evidence function of the Department, including maintaining intelligence files on criminal activity.

Enforce Town ordinances, Connecticut State Law and Federal Law to maintain peace and protect the lives and property of the community. As well as, the authority and responsibilities stated within the Thomaston Police Department Rules and Regulations.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives supervision from the Lieutenant. Directly supervises Patrol Officers temporarily assigned to investigations or a specialized unit, investigations conducted by Patrol Officers, and Department Patrol Officers when assigned by the Chief of Police.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Supervises assigned Officers in enforcement of all applicable State and Federal laws, Town ordinances and Department Rules and Regulations.

• Supervises the criminal investigations and property/evidence function of the Department and assigned Property Officer.

• Conducts follow-up investigations of crimes and other incidents as assigned.

• Assist Officers in the arrest of suspects, handling of complex or problem situations and preparation of incident reports.
• Reviews and approves reports prepared by subordinate Officers to ensure maintenance of accurate and appropriate records and reports.

• Supervises the maintaining of proper records and control of lost or recovered property or evidence of criminal activity.

• Evaluates assigned staff performance and appropriately recognizes commendable performance, whether observed or reported by a third party, and documents and counsels employees on opportunities to improve performance.

• Testifies in court concerning circumstances related to investigations or arrests.

• Interviews criminal suspects to obtain information about alleged criminal actions while adhering to Laws and procedures necessary so that information gathered withstands court scrutiny.

• Provides as liaison between the Thomaston Police Department, outside agencies, and the courts.

• Operational control and supervision of Department personal assigned to specialized units, (with the exception of Traffic).

• Responsible for the supervision/processing of significant crime scenes for physical evidence.

• Such assignments/reassignments, as may be placed from time to time by the Chief of Police.
