Never label or print your child’s
name on the outside of back packs, lunches, or clothing. Doing so will
make it possible for criminals to learn your child’s name and
trick them.
Establish a “Secret Code
Word” with your child. Explain to your child not to go with anyone
that does not know the “Code Word” regardless of the circumstances.
Explain to your child they should
never talk to strangers.

never get in a car with strangers.
Explain to your child they should
never let a stranger in their home.
Explain to your child they should
never let a stranger touch them.
Never allow your child to play
in a dimly lit place or unsupervised.
Children should play and walk
in a group and never alone. Remember there is safety in numbers.
Street Safety
Children who walk to school should
use the sidewalks and cross the street only at designated points and
only when directed by a traffic control device or crossing guard.
Bicycle Safety
Children who ride their bicycles
to school should always wear a helmet.
Children 10 years and older who
ride their bicycles to school should ride in the street with the flow
of traffic obeying all the traffic law and traffic control devices.
Children under 10 years old who
ride their bicycle to school should ride on the sidewalk and walk their
bicycle across the roadway at designated points and only when directed
to do so by a traffic control device or crossing guard.
Children riding in the roadway
should use hand and arm signals when turning.
Children riding in the roadway
should ride as close to the right edge of the roadway as possible.
Children riding in the roadway
should look over their left shoulder for oncoming traffic before swerving
or turning left.
Children riding in the roadway
should always yield the right of way to pedestrians and other vehicles.
Let them go first.
Never allow your child to carry
passengers on their bicycle. Carrying passengers limits visibility and
diminishes their ability to avoid obstacles and collisions.
Never allow your child to carry
object in their hands while riding their bicycle that prevent them from
using both hands to steer. Place objects in a backpack or basket attached
to the bicycle.
Children riding a bicycle should
tuck in their shoelaces and pant legs to avoid having them becoming
entangled with the pedals.
Children riding a bicycle should
whenever possible wear bright colored clothing to make them more visible
to traffic.
When leaving a bicycle unattended
it should be locked with a combination type bicycle lock. It should
be secured to the frame of the bicycle (Non removable parts) and to
a solid fixed object.
